The Reference Department at the Irvington Public Library offers professional
information expertise and instruction. This is accomplished through a variety
of sources such as books, periodicals, microfilms, electronic databases,
and the Internet. The reference staff will assist with research projects,
finding answers to questions, locating books and choosing reading materials,
using the computers and the Internet, and any other information needs.
In addition the reference desk offers the following services:
Computers
The Irvington Public Library provides computers
for public use. They can be used for word processing, educational software,
or to surf the Internet. The library also offers free computer
classes including the Internet and Microsoft Office.
Reserves and Inter-Library Loans
Book not found on shelf? The Reference Staff will place a hold or request
it from another library. If the Irvington Public Library does not own
a book or article for which you are looking and you have a library card,
the library can try to obtain it from another library. Patrons will be
notified by either telephone or postcard when the material becomes available
(there is a $.25 fee). Call the reference desk for more information.
Periodicals
The Library has subscriptions to 150 + magazines and newspapers. Most
magazines are kept for 3 years. Current and previous months of newspapers
are kept in the magazine section and are reference. Check at the reference
desk for a complete list. The latest issue of magazines are filed in display
racks in front of the Reference area.
Irvington History Collection
Materials of local interest are kept in the Irvington History Room. These
materials do not check out. The collection consists of books, newspaper
clippings, pamphlets, maps and photographs.
